Southern California Edison Boosts Efficiency with PowerCore Cloud
Customer Southern California Edison (SCE) is an IOU operating as a subsidiary of Edison International. As one of the nation’s largest electric utilities, it delivers power to 15 million people in 50,000 square miles across central, coastal, and southern California.
Background SCE works to ensure CAISO accurately settles market charges and to dispute inaccuracies to lower the cost for its customers. It's used PowerCore since 2013 and transitioned to PowerCore Cloud in 2024.
Results In 2023, its team:
-
Settled and validated over $1 billion net ($9 billion gross) in CAISO charges
-
Completed over $65 million in successful disputes and ERRA savings
-
Successfully implemented four key CAISO market initiatives

On-premise PowerCore enabled the organization’s:
While SCE had used PowerCore since 2013, it still aimed to:
Enter PowerCore Cloud.
Solution
Why move to the cloud? An increase in CAISO changes and initiatives required too many fixes and patches for SCE to keep up.
The benefits of moving to the cloud included:
- Faster and more frequent deployments of software
- Speedy fixes to any issues and gaining additional PowerCore support
- The ability to scale up or down for storage and CPU as needed
- Providing additional functionality
Implementation
The project launched in October 2023, and PowerCore Cloud went live April 17, 2024. The implementation process included:
- Data transfer from on-premise PowerCore to the cloud data center using Azure data box
- Data validation and verification of migrated data from thick to web
- Working through SCE stringent cloud cybersecurity, single sign-on authentication
- Eight weeks of parallel operations, running both systems side by side
Conclusion
After implementing PowerCore Cloud, the SCE team can more seamlessly (and accurately) validate market charges.
PowerCore has also helped streamline processing, leading to successful disputes and savings, directly benefiting SCE customers.
PowerCore Cloud has enabled faster and more frequent updates, keeping SCE at the forefront of technological advancements. It also provides unmatched flexibility, allowing the team to scale storage and CPU resources as needed.
In addition, the Yes Energy team handles support and maintenance of PowerCore, freeing the SCE IT staff to focus on other aspects of operations.
